How it works

This medicine works by stopping the work of the chemical compound acetylcholine on the eye's pupil so that it makes the pupil of the eye widen (dilation) and the eye muscles become loose (relaxation).

 

Indication

Cyclopentolate is used for several purposes:

  • Used to dilate the pupil and relax the eye muscles during eye examination (mydriatic agent)
  • In disease uveitis (inflammation of the middle layer of the eye)
  • Iritis (inflammation of the iris of the eye around the pupil)

 

Contraindications

This medicine cannot be used in patients who have diseases closed-angle glaucoma

 

Side Effects

Side effects that you can feel after using this medicine in the eyes are:

  • Temporary blurred view
  • Feeling hot in the eyes
  • Red eyes
  • Irritation to the eyes

However, there are serious side effects that you need to be aware of, such as the following:

  • experiencing fainting
  • Pain and swelling in the eyes
  • Changes in mood and mental state such as confusion, hallucinations, anxiety/agitation, changes in behavior and hyperactivity)
  • There is a change in vision such as seeing a rainbow when there is light
  • Increased eye pressure
  • Rapid and irregular heartbeat
  • Seizures
  • Slow and short breaths

There are also very serious side effects that can endanger your life that you need to know, namely severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) with symptoms of redness on the whole body, swelling in some parts of the body (face, tongue and throat) and there are respiratory disorders such as shortness of breath.

 

Preparation

Cyclopentolate is available in the form of eye drops 1%

 

Dose

The dose of this drug depends on the purpose, medical condition and age of the patient as follows:

To dilate the pupil and relax the eye muscles during eye examination.

  • Adults, can use the eye drop preparation of siklopentolat 0.5%, 1% or 2%, dripped 1 drop in both eyes 30-60 minutes before the examination is performed. It can be dripped again 5-15 minutes later if needed. In eyes that have a darker color, the dose can be increased.
  • Children aged 3 months-12 years, drop siklopentolat 1% in both eyes with 1 drop each 30-60 minutes before the examination procedure.
  • Children aged > 12 years, the dose of the drug by dripping siklopentolat 0.5% as 1 drop in both eyes 30-60 minutes before the eye examination.

Disease uveitis and iritis

  • Adults, siklopentolat 0.5% or 1% drug preparation is instilled in the affected eye with 1 drop every 6-8 hours once a day.
  • Children, the dose is the same as for adult patients.

 

Security

The use of the drug in pregnancy is in category C. This means that this drug shows adverse effects on the fetus when it is carried out on experimental animals. However, there have been no studies directly on humans. This drug in breastfeeding mothers is not known to be absorbed into breast milk or not. So its safety is not known.

 

Drug Interactions

The interaction of siklopentolat with other drugs such as eye pressure lowering drugs (carbachol and pilocapine) can reduce the effectiveness of these drugs.
