How it works

Phenylephrine is a drug that has the benefit of relieving symptoms of nasal congestion due to infection or allergies. Phenylephrine works by narrowing the blood vessels that are dilated due to infection or allergies so that it can relieve symptoms of nasal congestion. In addition, phenylephrine has the benefit of making the pupils of the eyes widen when preparing for eye examinations.

 

Indication

The medical condition in the form of a blocked nose, made the pupils of the eyes dilated (mydriasis) during preparation for eye examination.

 

Contraindications

Contraindications to the use of phenylephrine are severe hypertension, ventricular tachycardia (excessive heart rate), and severe hyperthyroidism (excess thyroid hormone).

 

Side Effects

Side effects are generally rare. However, there are some side effects that may occur, such as irregular heart rhythm, nausea, vomiting, headache, tremor, weakness, anxiety, insomnia, shortness of breath, blurred vision, eye pain, eye irritation.

 

Preparation

Some phenylephrine preparations that can be found to date are as follows:

  • Tablet
  • Syrup
  • Eye drops

 

Dose

To relieve symptoms of a stuffy nose

Adult and child dose > 12 years: 10 mg every 4 hours, used for up to 7 days. The maximum daily dose is 60 mg.

To dilate the pupils of the eyes

Adult dose: 2.5% ready-to-use eye drops, 1 drop in each eye about 15 - 120 minutes before eye examination.

Child dose: the same dose as the adult dose.

 

Security

Pregnancy:

Including FDA category C (there are animal studies in experimental trials that show adverse effects on the fetus but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans) so that the potential benefits and risks of the drug need to be considered and used with caution in pregnant women.

 

Drug Interactions

The simultaneous use of drugs between phenylephrine and tricyclic antidepressants has the potential for drug interactions in the form of increased effects of tricyclic antidepressants so that special attention and supervision is needed when taken together.
