How it works

Cefixime belongs to a class of drugs called cephalosporin antibiotics. This drug works by killing the bacteria that cause the infection.

Indication

Cefixime is used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria such as bronchitis, gonorrhea (a sexually transmitted disease), infections of the ears, throat, tonsils, and urinary tract.

Contraindications

History of allergy to cefixime and/or cephalosporin, penicillin, or beta-lactam antibiotics.

Side Effects

  • Stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, bloating, headache, or dizziness may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor immediately.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur, such as: Severe stomach pain, persistent nausea/vomiting, yellowing of the eyes/skin, dark-colored urine, unusual fatigue, signs of infection (such as a persistent sore throat, fever), easy bruising/bleeding, signs of kidney problems (such as changes in the amount of urine), and mental/mood changes (such as confusion).
  • This medicine may cause severe intestinal problems because of a bacterium called difficult. This condition can occur during treatment or weeks to months after treatment is stopped. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience: diarrhea that does not stop, abdominal pain/cramps, and blood/pus in your stool.
  • Long-term or repeated use of this medicine may cause a fungal infection of the mouth and genitals (vagina). Contact your doctor if you notice white patches in your mouth, unusual vaginal discharge, or other symptoms of a fungal infection.

Preparation

Cefixime is available in capsule, tablet, chewable tablet, caplet, and syrup forms.

Dose

  • Adults: 200-400 mg per day given as a single dose or in 2 divided doses for 7 days, may be continued for up to 14 days if necessary, depending on the severity of the infection.
  • Children aged > 6 months to < 10 years with weight < 50 kg: 8 mg/kg per day as a single dose or in 2 divided doses; age > 10 years with weight > 50 kg: same as adult dose.

Security

  • Cefixime can cause live bacterial vaccines (such as typhoid vaccine) not to work well. Tell your spartame expert that you are getting cefixime treatment before immunizing/vaccinating.
  • The chewable tablet form of cefixime may contain aspartame (an artificial sweetener). If you have phenylketonuria (an inherited defect that causes a buildup of the amino acid phenylalanine in the body) or other conditions that require you to limit/avoid aspartame (or phenylalanine) in your diet, ask your doctor about the safety of using this medication.
  • During pregnancy, this medication should be used only if absolutely necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
  • It is not known whether this medicine is excreted in breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Drug Interactions

  • Cefixime may increase the effect of drugs and the risk of bleeding from anticoagulants (blood thinners, for example, warfarin).
  • Probenesid may increase the blood levels of cefixime.
  • Cefixime may increase the level of the drug carbamazepine (anticonvulsant) in the blood.
